Edison's "Fighting Red Raiders" climaxed their greatest victory
in school history with a 27-0 triumph over arch rival Miami High
on Thanksgiving night in the Orange Bowl. The Raiders bewildered
some 38,000 fans as they rolled past and blanked the Stingarees
for the first time in 35 years.
The play which broke the backs of Miami High came early in the
second quarter. Darrell Cox lined up in deep punt formation, but
the ball was snapped to Fullback Joe Taylor who dodged several
Stingarees, finally being stopped on the Miami High 7 after a
36-yard gain.
Two
plays later Cox burst through for the first touchdown for
Edison. Claude Souder then intercepted a pass at the Sting 28
and raced to the Miami High 15. With 5 seconds remaining to be
played in the half, Jeff Cortright crashed over from the 2-yard
line.
A
Shelby Lee to Russ Brown pass play which covered 33 yards
accounted for the third Raider score. Cox then added his second
score of the evening on a 9-yard jaunt around around left end
which made the final score read Edison 27 and Miami High 0.
Edison's stout defense led by Ed Dubois, Glenn Tulk and Ken
Willits was really an eye-opener. This out standing defense
stopped the Stings cold on a fourth and one on the 20-yard line
to help turn the tide for victory. There is no argument. This
was Edison's greatest victory. |
